About My Writing...I have been a member of Spilt Ink since its inception and have been pursuing the craft of writing since my early thirties. I wrote stories and poems as a child and teenager, but as I got older, I let my writing career languish while I pursued other things - primarily music (I played French horn and sang for many years). I renewed my writing practice in 1993 with a few poems and a series of stories written in collaboration with Brian Kunde based in the fictional town of Los Bellotas. My interest had shifted toward poetry in the late 90s and I am now writing poetry almost exclusively. I am also active in non-fiction, principally writing for the Trail Center. I have written a number of hike descriptions, essays and columns for the Trail Center's quarterly newsletter, The Trail Companion, where I served as literary editor and website manager (responsible for content) for the TC as well. My third role is proprietor of Red Gravenstein Press. Under this imprint, I have published seven chapbooks. I enjoy the process of book design and layout, striving for an inviting and distinctive look to each publication. The chapbooks have also provided an opportunity to collaborate with my partner, Joan Schwan, who illustrated two recent publications. In both my poetry and non-fiction, my main interests lie in the world around us -- creating a sense of place, exploring where we live, learning to observe natural processes, including human interactions.
