- Environmental Protection Agency Student
Center Waste & Recycling Page
- This interactive site explains why, where, and how
waste is created in America. The EPA provides ideas about
how to reduce and recycle waste. Enter a zipcode to get
specific environmental information about a neighborhood.
This part of the site provides a good introduction, but
students should visit the rest of the site for a more
comprehensive understanding of waste and recycling. Last

- Garbage: How Can My Community Reduce
Waste?
- This site is a good introduction to waste management.
It answers basic questions about solid waste, hazardous
waste, and sewage and describes how to solve problems
related to garbage in the environment. The site also
provides links for further research. "Garbage" is
inspired by programs from Race to Save the Planet, a
video series in the Annenberg/CPB Multimedia Collection.
c1998. The Annenberg/CPB Project.

Topic for Discussion
- Long Distance, Short Life: Why Big
Business Favours Recycling.
- Article by Simon Fairlie. The Ecologist. Vol 22 no6,
1992. This article dicusses some of the global
controversy about recycling. Fairlie makes a strong point
that reuse, not recycling, is the most critical issue to
sustainability. Read and come prepared to discuss.
