Guide to Boolean & Phrase Searching...continued

Phrase Searching

  • means "I want documents that contain both or all these words, in this exact order."
  • narrows a search
  • use when you are looking for a distinctive string of words generally associated with your topic
  • surround phrases with quotations
    • "John F. Kennedy"
    • "Walt Disney World"
    • "global warming"
    • "affirmative action"
    • "World Health Organization"
Looking for a proper name or the name of an organization, society or movement?

Phrase searching is powerful in significantly narrowing your search results. Use it often!

Some search services provide specific options for phrases, some do not allow them at all, but almost all will allow you to enter a phrase in quotes, ignoring the quotations if not supported.
Boolean searching draws its name from George Boole, a British mathematician and logician from the 19th century.
