A significant proportion of the U.S. population has one or more physical disabilities and most Americans will acquire disabilities as they age. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other legislation have increased opportunities for full participation in society by seeking to architectural, technological, service and employment barriers. A survey of six public libraries and one academic library on the San Francisco Peninsula reveals that while all have worked toward ADA compliance, their levels of success have varied. The libraries typically offer their patrons with disabilities a selection of assistive devices and other services in-house, as well as outreach services to homebound patrons. Nonetheless, the low level of use in both areas may indicate a need for additional outreach and commitment to disabilities services.
