Dead Fish on Rickenbacker Lake

I. Preface

This online tutorial will aid upper high school (10-12) and beginning undergraduate students to effectively use the Acterra Environmental Library & Resource Center (a part of Acterra: Action for the Earth) and other resources for their research in environmental courses. The first part (Section B) instructs students on the variety of resources available to them at the Acterra Library and elsewhere; the second (Section C), provides information on how to evaluate the information they find. A final section (D) provides a quick review of the topics covered in the tutorial.

The site will feature graphics throughout - a number of which will be animated - and a selective use of music and other audio to help capture the students' interest (noted in Introduction only, but planned throughout). Through quizzes and some interactive exercises (to be developed with Javascript forms), the tutorial makes use of active learning principles. In addition, the tutorial incorporates both skills and concept based learning in its presentation of resources and evaluation skills.

Students may review other sections at any point through the outline pages linked on the navigation bars of each page; they may also view a glossary of bibliographic terms (planned, but not developed for this storyboard outline). To reinforce the lessons taught in the tutorial, students will have the opportunity to print out guides that highlight many of the tutorials' important points (Pt. III.C). These guides will also be available from the reference desk.

The tutorial will be implemented on Acterra's server and be maintained by library staff and the Acterra Web manager.

Portions of this tutorial are inspired by and adapted from other online tutorials. The introduction, tutorial evaluation and basic framework are based on the University of Texas' TILT; portions of What Kind of Information? (Module 1, pt. 9) and Other Sources of Information (Module 1, pt. 13) are adapted from the CSU Information Competence; and portions of All Information is NOT Created Equal (Module 2, pt.1), from Bowling Green State University's, Library User Education: Library Basics. Acterra Library resource descriptions are adapted from the Library's website. Finally, the scenario, and especially The Mystery…Solved! (Conclusion/Review, pt. 3) are adapted from Menhaden Fish Kill, a science module developed by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).
