I have long been fascinated by the idea of pilgrimage.
In college, I focused on the medieval world and
subsequently got a big dose of Church and literary history
relating to pilgrimages - from Chaucer to the famous
pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. At some point, I
became mildly obsessed with going to Compostela myself and
did so in 1994. Although it was a physically punishing
journey, the pilgrimage was profound, exciting and
everything I had hoped for. A year later, I joined some of
my fellow Santiago pilgrims on another pilgrimage - this
time a portion of the circular Tro Breiz route in
Brittany. That journey proved to be much less profound and
much more of a pleasant vacation with virtually no
spiritual element. Nonetheless, I would gladly go wandering
again, given time and opportunity.
These pages gather together
some of my writings, photos and links related to
pilgrimage.
